For as long as I can remember, my goal was to "Change the World." I desperately desired to leave a big mark; I felt like I was destined for some kind of "greatness." In elementary school I decided that international political impact was my purpose and dreamt of being the first woman in the Oval Office. It may have been mildly delusional, but my path seemed clear. From aspiring to be President to considering roles like Secretary of State or UN ambassador in high school, I thought I had a blueprint to follow. Go to College. Take the classes. Follow the steps. A + B = C. Bam!! Big Purpose. Big Impact! Let's GO!
However, somewhere along the way, a silent longing surfaced. Alongside my aspirations for international impact, I deeply desired to be a mom. It was an assumption I'd always made: "Of course, I'll have kids one day." Yet, the journey to motherhood didn't follow the same clear-cut formula. There were no marked routes, no A + B = C. This uncharted territory left me grappling with internal conflict, frustrated by the lack of a straightforward path to fulfill my desire for a family. This angst was compounded by a shift away from the political trajectory that I had long held on a pedestal - leaving me confused about my future and my overall purpose.
Fast-forward (many tear-filled years later than I had hoped) I met my husband and was blessed with two incredible kids. Motherhood, I soon discovered, was more rewarding than any goal or ambition I had previously considered. It reset my priorities, realigned my aspirations, and made me feel simultaneously superhuman and fragile. The world I wanted to change was now under my roof and I embraced my role in shaping and nurturing these young souls with everything I had.
The moment my son was placed on my chest, I felt a surge of power and presence I had never experienced before. At that moment, I felt my truest and strongest self come alive. Motherhood is an incredible force. It encompasses the transformative journey of pregnancy, birth and creating an unbreakable bond with a new life. It is vulnerable, fierce, strong, tender and raw. It is sacred. The purpose I had always longed for was realized. Motherhood was everything I didn’t know I needed.
I had finally found the desire of my heart. But as every mother knows… it moves SO FAST! I understand the exhaustion that comes with the beautiful chaos of daily life. But in the midst of this crazy fatigue, one of my biggest fears is forgetting the small things. As I reflect on this journey - from fancy global ambitions to my profound experience of motherhood - I am drawn to the power of photography. This tool that allows us to freeze and tangibly hold on to moments in time. Turning both the monumental and the everyday-easily-forgotten experiences into deeply sacred treasures.
